Joaquim Germano Pinto Machado Correia da Silva, son of Joaquim Correia da Silva and Maria do Pilar de Matos Pinto Machado Correia da Silva was born in Miragaia, Porto, on 15 June 1930. His paternal grandparents were Germano Correia da Silva and Deolinda Rosa de Oliveira and his maternal grandparents were Bernardino Augusto Pinto Machado de Azevedo and Bernardina da Conceição Gomes Carneiro Álvares de Matos.

He attended the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto where he studied Medicine and received his doctorate degree in February 1962. For his doctoral dissertation, he wrote about "Fossae Cranii Occipitales Inferiores", "Do ponto de vista teleológico, não está esclarecida integração do baço no sistema porta" and "A proteinária de certos síndromes nefróticos pode não ter tradução lesional no glomérulo". He was approved unanimously and his work earned him a score of 18 out of 20.

Between 1969 and 2000 he was full professor of Anatomy at FMUP. He collaborated with the University of Minho, where in 1974 he became a member of the Establishment Committee of the Medicine course (this course was authorised in 1999 and inaugurated in 2001). He was the Chairman of the Scientific Board of the School of Health Sciences of that university, heading the course of Medicine between 2001 and 2007, and a member of its Establishment Committee. At that same university, he was a member of the Academic Board, of the Assembly and of the Senate.
Joaquim Pinto Machado returned to the U.Porto in 2010, called up to be part of the Council of Representatives of the Faculty of Medicine.

Fotografia de Joaquim Pinto Machado / Photo of Joaquim Pinto MachadoAt the end of the 60s, and alongside his University career, he became involved in politics, which would last throughout his lifetime, was appointed councillor to the National Assembly for the "liberal wing" of Acção Nacional Popular, during the 10th Legislature (1969-1973).
After the revolution of 25th April 1974, he joined the Social Democratic Party, becoming a member of its national council. In the 80s, he was Secretary of State for Higher Education (1984-1985), and represented Mário Soares in his candidacy for President of the Republic, and became Governor of Macau (124th Governor, between 1986 and 1987). Years later, he joined the committee in support of Aníbal Cavaco Silva, in the presidential campaign of 2005.

He was a member of the Porto department of the Association of Catholic Doctors, of the Association for Social and Economic Development (SEDES) and, from 1998 on, of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. He was a founding member of the League of Friends of S. João Hospital.

He received the title of Doctor honoris causa from the University of East Asia Oriental (Macau), in 1987, and from the University of Minho, in 2002.

He was married to Maria Fernanda Nugent Dias de Almeida (10 May 1956) and had a son - Gonçalo de Almeida Correia da Silva.

He died at the S. João Hospital on 14 March 2011. His funeral was held the next day at the Church of Cristo Rei, in Porto. After his death, FMUP declared 3 days of mourning in memory of the educator, scientist and humanist.
